In recent years, the term “staycation” has burst into a popular concept embraced by many, for many reasons. But what does it really mean, and why has it gained such traction? Simply put, a staycation is a vacation spent at home or near one’s home rather than traveling to a distant destination. Initially born out of necessity, especially during the pandemic, staycations have transformed into a preferred choice for those seeking relaxation without the hassles of extended travel plans.

Why Have Staycations Become so Popular?
Recently, the idea of staycation has taken off again during the 2021 pandemic, out of necessity. Travel restrictions meant international (and even national) holidays were limited, so staycations were the only possibly way for many of us. And now, it sort of just gained popularity and people are here for it still.
What is Not A Staycation?
When traveling is involved – it’s not a staycation. By definition. Even if you just travel in your own country or county or borough – that is not a staycation if you stay anywhere else. Sorry to break it to you. Day trips aren’t a staycation either.
The Original Meaning of Staycation
The word staycation is a mix of stay and vacation and dates back to at least the 1940s. It described staying at home during vacation days and was thought to be associated with World War II as many things were rationed, including fuel for unnecessary travel.
A Shift in Perspective
The traditional vacation often conjures images of sandy beaches, exotic locales, and lavish hotels. In contrast, a staycation turns that imagery on its head. It encourages us to embrace our surroundings, discovering the charm and pleasures that can be found within our own communities and homes. This shift in perspective enables individuals and families to enjoy a break from the daily grind while also being mindful of budgets and logistics… even sustainability!
Saving Money
For many, a staycation offers numerous benefits. First, it eliminates significant travel costs, allowing you to spend the money saved on activities and experiences at home, such as gourmet meals, spa days, or local attractions. This conscious spending can lead to a different, but still a lovely experience like traditional vacations but without the financial stress.
Kids Love It
Children like the idea of staying close to a familiar place because it’s less stressful. There are numerous theme parks, zoos and play centres scattered across the country – so we all have them in our local or near local area as well. Getting outside into nature is great for the whole family: check out local parks, National Parks. Plus, the numerous walking and cycling trails will certainly burn off some energy.

Planning The Perfect Staycation
A successful staycation starts with planning (similar to any other vacation, really). Here are some ideas to help you create your own blissful break without stepping foot outside your locality.
Local Exploration
Rediscover local attractions that you may have taken for granted. Museums, parks, and nature reserves, anything you have locally available. Be a tourist in your own town—visit that historical site or even take a guided tour you’ve never considered and maybe you learn something new about the place you live!
Home Makeover
Transform your living space into a mini-resort. Declutter and redecorate. Why not try a spa-like experience in the bathroom or giving your garden a makeover with parasols, sun loungers and a new picnic set? It doesn’t even have to be new. If you keep an eye on Facebook Marketplace, Olio and Freecycle, you might be able to collect a some of them locally and free!
Culinary Adventures
Experiment with new recipes or indulge in takeout from local favorites. Host a themed dinner for you and your family or friends, where you prepare food from different cultures, or even host a cooking class at home.
Digital Detox
Disconnect from technology to rejuvenate your mind. At first, if can be difficult, but you’ll be thankful for doing it later. It will feel very refreshing, trust me. Make a conscious effort to set aside your devices and seek out activities that spark joy. Read that book you’ve been meaning to get to, or start that new hobby you always wanted to.
Reconnect with Nature
Spend some time outdoors: hiking, biking, or simply taking a leisurely stroll through your neighborhood. Nature has a remarkable ability to restore our spirits, so find beautiful local spots to enjoy. Pack a picnic and take a blanket. If you have a local beach too, lucky you, you are set up for breezy sea days with fish and chips or clam chowder. A day at the local beach, lake or forest makes unforgettable memories for the whole family.

Self-Care Days
Create at-home spa experiences with soothing baths, facials, and mindfulness practices. Devoting time to your well-being can be incredibly rewarding and it really IS just like a mini holiday. Alternatively, since you are saving the money on traveling, you can treat yourself at your local spa, hair or cosmetic saloon for a treatment. Why not?
Special Activities
Think about experiences that require little travel, yet they offer high enjoyment, such as attending a local concert, visiting a farmer’s market, or participating in community festivals. Check local listings for events happening during your planned staycation.
Ultimately, the beauty of a staycation lies in its versatility. If you live in a city with endless activities, make the most of those. If you live in quiet village, the possibilities are great for relaxing, resting and enjoying nearby nature areas. You don’t need to travel far to recharge; sometimes, all it takes is a shift in perspective to appreciate the world right outside your door.
What is The Goal of Staycations
Like I mentioned above, it can be anything from saving money, being more sustainable with your travels, but I think the mail goal also could be to break away from routine and experience joy. You may find that you return to work feeling rejuvenated, inspired, and grateful for the little things.
